Thanks for visiting this site and taking an interest in the Bitesize Golf programme. I have been in golf for over 50 years, playing as a junior, coaching as a pro and nurturing my own boys as a father. I have had a passion for coaching kids in golf since my early days as an assistant PGA Professional, in England Wales and Scotland. When I finally became Head Pro at a club, I did what every other pro was doing which was to offer plenty of free sessions and cheap Saturday morning lessons. I was doing lots of school visits and giving my time promoting the game at summer fetes, youth clubs and Guide and Scout camps in the hope that some of the hundreds of kids I was introducing golf to would take up the offer to come to the club and maybe think about becoming golfers of the future.
I used this formula for nearly 20 years! It's a tried and tested formula that's seen as the norm for almost all golf pros simply because we were conditioned into 'doing it for the sake of golf', or 'giving your time and making access cheap or free'. When I actually stopped to think about it, it was all pretty laudable and I never minded giving so much to trying to get kids remotely interested in golf, but there was a slight problem
I know, I tried so hard for 20 years and was getting the same results where around 3 - 5% of the kids I introduced might take the game up and possibly become a member of the club. There are reasons why golf has been on this track for over 60 years, but I won't go into that. Driven by overwhelming frustration at the status quo and the aligning of a few elements, such as the birth of my sons and the emergence of the PC computer, I took a good long look at the way things were and the way they might be and my decision was...
Firstly, every Saturday morning at the club I was waiting and hoping that my juniors would turn up, I never really knew who would and who wouldn't. When the time came, I'd take a look at who was present, arm them with some clubs and balls and then on the way to the practice ground I'd be thinking, 'What shall we do today'? 'What did we do last week'? 'Come to think of it, who was here last week and who's never been before? 'I know, we'll probably do pretty much the same as every week and hit some balls and finish with a game'. I hope they turn up again next week.
Can you imagine schools running on this basis?
The idea came to me whilst I was hanging over the upstairs rail of a viewing gallery, whilst my lads were having their weekly swimming lessons. I started thinking about what we had to do as parents to make sure our boys could keep their places with the swimming lessons. We had a 20 minute window to get to the leisure centre on a Sunday or they'd lose their places. The cost of the lessons was 30 times more than my golf lessons!
In 1997, I purchased my first home PC, which gave me the ability, after many hours of self teaching, to create documents and eventually booklets that I could give out as resource books to my pupils. This was great because I could now have structure to my lessons and form my pupils into groups. Brilliant, I now had a class of pupils I could coach, challenge and reward and then progress and I could charge the same as swimming, martial arts and music lessons and so it began.
The first class completed the 6 weeks course, had a great time and received their certificates, but as this was happening, parents were already networking and we were getting enquiries for new pupils wanting to start on the next enrolment. I moved the first class onto the next level and started a new class at the first level, perfect. This continued until I'd managed to write 6 levels and each of my 6 classes were full and what was even more incredible was the phone was still ringing and
I actually had a 36 week waiting list!
The kids who completed the programme as it was, were now well educated members of the club with handicaps and winning prizes and there were plenty more following on.
In 2001, I decided to form a company and take this concept to other golf professionals, excited that this was actually going to make a massive difference to them and the game in general, plus enhance the lives of thousands of young people. The company was called Young Masters Golf (you may well have heard of it) and with a fantastic team in the office and on the road, we managed to get to...
Over 850 golf clubs
Over 1, 200 golf pros
International recognition
Over 120,000 levels of the programme completed
National and International competitions
The company was making a huge difference in all the ways I had hoped, but unfortunately I was unable to continue the quest that I'd started. However, not being one to give up on dreams, goals and ambitions, it has taken me a few years to regroup and launch Bitesize Golf, which I'm delighted to say is a massively improved version of my original. Different in many ways and with so much more to offer and it's with this history and pedigree that I offer Bitesize Golf to you, knowing it will make a difference to you, your business and the kids you will coach and ultimately to the game of golf.
